The call of the North

Driven by a dream born in childhood, a woman and her dogs face the harshness of the North. Between trust, physical limits, and responsibility, the journey becomes more important than the race.

Lisa is a musher who has devoted her life to dogs. What began as a childhood fascination with snow and adventure has grown into a life choice rooted in care, sacrifice, and trust.

As she prepares for a 200-kilometer race in the North, an old back injury resurfaces, forcing her to confront fear and uncertainty. Far from home, amid unforeseen challenges and extreme conditions, Lisa faces a conflict greater than competition itself: protecting her dogs or pushing beyond her own limits.

Through training sessions, snowbound silences, and moments of doubt, the journey becomes a reflection on the fragile boundary between ambition and responsibility. Lisa is faced with a fundamental question: how far can one go when responsibility matters more than ambition?

Set against the centenary of the historic Alaskan serum run, made legendary by the figure of Balto, FREE SOULS – The Call of the North takes its place within a tradition that weaves together memory, endurance, and the bond between humans and dogs, reinterpreting it through an intimate and contemporary lens.

The Film Director

Andrea Azzetti is a director and cinematographer. After beginning his career in photography, he turned to documentary filmmaking, developing an approach focused on people’s inner journeys rather than on outward achievements.

In his work, he has portrayed figures such as Ettore Castiglioni and Armando Aste, exploring their choices, fragilities, and sense of responsibility. His films have received recognition at both national and international film festivals.

Alongside his directing work, he collaborates as a cinematographer on documentary productions and works as a videomaker for national television broadcasters.
